This World Ocean Day, we’re answering a question we hear a lot: "What does a company that makes pads have to do with the ocean?" The answer is simple: The ocean is our life source. It sustains us all. And at Saathi, our mission has always been to create products that sustain you and the planet. "Wonder: Sustaining what sustains us" is the official theme for World Oceans Day 2025. It celebrates the ocean's beauty, its mystery, and its vital role in our lives. Oceans are vital for our planet's health, food, medicine, and the biosphere. The ocean covers over 70% of our planet, providing 50% of the oxygen we breathe and serving as a primary source of food for billions. It’s home to most of the earth’s biodiversity and absorbs about 30% of the carbon dioxide we produce, acting as a buffer against climate change.

And yet, it remains a world of mystery.

• Scientists believe that 80 % of the volcanic eruptions on Earth take place in the ocean.

• Less than 5% of the ocean has been explored!

• Earth’s longest mountain range, the Mid-Ocean Ridge, is entirely underwater.

• The deepest part of the ocean extends approximately 36,200 feet.

Despite its majesty and mystery, this vital system is in trouble. We're poisoning it with plastic, chemicals, and noise pollution, threatening the very fabric of marine life and ecosystems. With 90% of big fish populations depleted and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, the balance has been broken.

Our Story: How Saathi Joined the Fight for the Ocean 

Our commitment to a healthier planet led us directly to the ocean. We saw the devastating impact of plastic pollution and knew we had to act at the source. Instead of just cleaning up the plastic already in the ocean, our core mission is to stop it from getting there in the first place by providing natural, biodegradable and compostable alternatives.

This mission opened doors for us to join the global community of innovators, and we’re proud to be part of the Katapult Ocean, Ocean Innovation Organization, and Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) communities. These experiences solidified our role not just as a product company, but as a dedicated member of the ocean conservation movement.

The Indian Ocean is Calling for Our Help

For our community here in India, this isn't a distant problem. The Indian Ocean, which blesses our long coastlines, faces a range of severe challenges: rampant overfishing, the looming threat of deep-sea mining, devastating plastic pollution that chokes our shores, coral reef degradation, and unchecked coastal development. The wonder of our local marine ecosystems is at risk.

Ocean pollution takes many forms, including:

• Plastic pollution: plastic chokes marine life, pollutes habitats, and even enters our food chain. (Microplastics are deadlier than you think.)

• Chemical pollution: Industrial and agricultural runoff introduces harmful chemicals into the ocean, poisoning marine organisms and disrupting the ecosystems.

• Noise pollution: Underwater noise from shipping and construction can disrupt how marine animals communicate, navigate, and feed.

From Helpless to Hero: How You Can Sustain What Sustains Us 

We live on an incredible planet, but in recent years, the whispers of the changing climate are growing louder, urging us to pay attention to our habits. The ocean and climate are inextricably linked. Here's how:

• The ocean absorbs most of the solar energy reaching the Earth.

• Ocean currents circulate heat around the planet, regulating our climate.

• The ocean's slower warming and cooling moderate coastal weather.

• Evaporation from the ocean creates most rain clouds, influencing where it rains on land. 

Understanding this connection and our role within it can feel overwhelming, but positive change begins with small, consistent actions. The most immediate threat we can address together is plastic. Every year, 8 million metric tons of plastic pollution find their way into our oceans, choking marine life and entering our food chain. As a brand dedicated to providing plastic-free alternatives, we know that conscious consumer choices are a powerful tool in this fight.
