For the first time ever, Global Goals Week has taken place outside of the UN’s General Assembly in New York City. This year it's taking place in Dubai as part of Expo 2020 from January 15-22nd. Combining both events will help raise awareness about why the UN Sustainable Development Goals are so important for both people and the planet.
WHAT’S HAPPENING DURING GLOBAL GOALS WEEK?
On Saturday January 15th, the colorful Global Goals lit up the world’s largest 360 degree projection screen, the Al Wasl dome. The UN’s Deputy Secretary-General Amina J Mohammed gave an inspirational talk about how we all can work to make the 17 Global Goals a reality for all.
“It is up to each and every one of us, individually and collectively, to turn this engagement into partnerships and investments that tangibly improve people’s lives everywhere. With the Global Goals woven into the fabric of Expo 2020, I cannot think of a more appropriate place for us to renew our shared commitment to keep the promises that we made in 2015.” – Amina J Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations.

WHAT IS EXPO 2020?
Dubai is currently hosting Expo 2020 and aims to use sustainability to connect minds and create a brighter future. They used reusable construction materials to build all of the structures, they generate half of their electricity from renewable sources and have a pavilion designated to sustainability.
WHAT IS THE PROGRAMME FOR PEOPLE AND PLANET?
Designed with and for the global community, the Programme for People and Planet (PPP) at Expo 2020 addresses the most critical challenges and opportunities we face as a world today.
Through 10 Theme Weeks and 18 International Days, participants and Expo 2020 visitors will explore solutions to fundamental global issues – ranging from fighting climate change and biodiversity loss and making human habitats more sustainable, to bridging the digital divide and ensuring equal access to education and healthcare.
More than 220 events will take place as part of the programme, from large forums and public conventions, to seminars and workshops. Expo 2020’s signature platform for connecting minds, the World Majlis series will play a prominent role, with 53 individual sessions set to engage visitors over the course of the six months.
The aim is to maximize the potential of our collective media and communications networks, offering the world the opportunity to unite around fundamental issues that impact all of us.
Underpinned by the themes of technology and innovation, youth and women and girls’ empowerment, the Programme for People and Planet will assemble an unparalleled array of perspectives, fostering exchanges of impactful ideas between leading experts (including wildlife advocate Dame Jane Goodall, Eden Project founder Sir Tim Smit, and Her Excellency Sarah Al Amiri, UAE Minister of State for Advanced Technology and the woman behind the Emirates Mars Mission), the 191 nations participating in Expo 2020, as well as business leaders, grassroots actors, and the wider global community.
‘Join the making of a new world’ as #Expo2020 Dubai convenes the global community to devise solutions for some of the world’s most pressing problems. How can we create a future that is fair and inclusive for all, whilst restoring our balance with the planet? What actions can we take today that will ensure a better tomorrow?
