Missed the last episode?

After a long journey, we made our stop at Gram Panchayat Phulera, which showed a village’s attempt to openly discuss periods and sustainability - something we still don’t see often enough.

Offscript Period Series | Ep 14

Gokuldham Society is not just the “Mini India” of Mumbai - it’s also proof that when a community comes together, even the smallest changes can make a big difference. Between Jethalal’s excuses, Bhide’s rules, and Popatlal’s aggression, there’s a lot we can learn about waste management, sustainability, and even period talk in a housing society of India.

Because in the end, change doesn’t scale through instructions. It scales when people around you start doing it too.

Pyaar, masti aur thodi bahut nok-jhok ke saath, agar Gokuldham Society ne shuru kiya ek naya mission- Waste-Free, Plastic-Free Society- toh unki exclusive interviews kuch aise hote:

(Everyone is seated in the clubhouse for a meeting. The Ekmeva Secretary is trying to begin a new initiative in the society and this is how everyone puts their opinion about it. )

Jethalal Gada-

“Dekho bhai, main toh keh raha hoon- waste management ka kaam toh Secretary Bhide kare. Uska hi toh ‘department’ hai! Main toh vyapari hoon. Lekin Bhide ne society meeting mein 40-minute ka lecture de diya ki ‘Plastic-Free ho jao warna fine lagega’, tab maine socha- arre customers bhi toh aajkal yahi dekhte hain.

(Bhide, already irritated, jumps in before Jethalal can finish.)

“Society ka ekmeva secretary hone ke naate, yeh mera farz banta hai ki Gokuldham hamesha swacch rahe. Maine society mein dry aur wet waste ke alag dustbin lagwaye, aur har Sunday community cleaning drive hogi. Ab kuch log bolenge ki inn sab me mera kya kaam ye toh Secretary ka ‘department’ hai, lekin ye har ek citizen ki zimmedari hai, sirf secretary ki nahi.”

Jethalal hesitates and continues: “Isiliye Gada Electronics mein plastic bags hata ke paper bags shuru kiye. Lekin sun lo - credit main Bhide ko bilkul nahi dunga. Ye sab akhir me mere hi toh vichar hai! Aur kya hai ki samaj me- time khatam ho gaya? Thike koi baat nai.”

Atmaram Tukaram Bhide:

Kiti swaarthi manus ahe ha! Devaaaaa…Hamare zamane mein, ye sab toh ek ‘jeene ka tareeka’ tha. Plastic ka toh problem hi nahi tha lekin aaj kal kuch logo ko itna samjhaana padta hai ki paryavaran saaf rakho, society ka maintenance time pe bharo aur meetings me late mat aaya karo lekin- off topic ho gaya? Ahem, aise chalta rehta hai.”

Dr. Haathi: “Saahi baat hai.”

Taarak Mehta:

“Dekhiye, waste management aur eco-friendly awareness sirf ek activity nahi, ek responsibility hai. Gokuldham mein hamne open discussions rakhe ‘period talk’ jaise sessions, jaha parents aur bacche dono aakar apne sawal puch sakte hai.

Daya, overexcited: “Hamare Gokuldham me sab log Mehta sahab ko bohot maante hai isiliye hum sab unke saath hai! Kachra alag karne ka kaam toh hamare society se hi shuru hua hai. Aur ab toh humne period talks bhi shuru kar diye!”

Anjali Mehta joins: “Hum toh kaafi time se waste segregate kar rahe hain. Kitchen waste ka compost bhi bana lete hain. Jab aadat ban jaati hai na, toh effort nahi lagta.”

Daya Gada:

“Meri maa bhi hamesha kehti hai, ‘Sehat se kabhi samjhauta nahi karna chahiye!’. Ab kya bolu meri maa hai hi mahan. Hey maa, mataji!

Roshan Singh Sodhi:

“Maine apne garage mein pura recycling system bana liya hai. Scrap metal, tyres, sab recycle hota hai. Aur society ke bacchon ko bhi dikhaya ki kaise purane bike parts se furniture ban sakta hai. Ekdam vadhiyaa!”

Roshan adds: “Haanji, aur ghar bhi dheere dheere recycle centre ban raha hai!”

Komal Haathi:

“Waste kam karna health ke liye bhi bohot zaruri hai. Plastic ka pollution sirf environment nahi, hamare lungs aur liver ko bhi affect karta hai. Microplastics jo bolte hai unke bare me bhi information dena bohot important hai.”

Dr. Haathi adds: “Aur hygiene products ke bare mein awareness dena- woh toh har health camp ka part hona chahiye. Maine free check-up camps mein yeh topic add kar diya tha, vaise free toh nahi bol sakte maine samose mein payment le li thi.”

Jethalal: “Arey inko khane ke alawa kuch suchta hai ki nahi?”

Chacha ji: “Jethiya, tu toh mat hi bol, din bhar sirf chaay-fafda-jalebi thoonsta rehta hai.”

Popatlal:

“Aap sabko toh pata hoga ki main toh hamesha society ke issues cover karta hoon, toh yeh green mission jo Mehta Sahab aur Bhide ne shuru kiya hai, vo bhi maine Toofan Express me turant publish karwaya, taaki baki logo ko bhi pata chale ye kitna urgent matter hai.

Mujhe kal ke period talk mein hi pata chala ki plastic pads 500 saal lagate hai decompose hone mein… cancel! Cancel plastic pads! Main toh apne hone vali patni ko bhi yahi bolunga ki vo thoda soch samajh ke products use kare. Bas koi mera rishta karva do mein aur kuch nahi chahta. Aur haa plastic-free world bhi karva do.. Vo obviously jyada zaruri hai.”

Champaklal Gada:

Vyapariyon ko toh isme shaamil hona hi chahiye. Sirf Iss babuchak ko 2 hafte lage ye karne, lekin akhir mein baat maan hi gaya. Aaj ki pidi ko bhi ye sikha dene chahiye taaki aage koi taklif na ho. Hame bhi aur hamare paryavaran ko bhi.”

Bhide, agreeing: “Chachaji ekdam sahi baat kari aapne.”

Abdul:

“Meri all-in-one shop pe ab main single-use plastic ka maal bilkul nahi rakhta. Customers ko cloth bags deta hoon, aur refill ka system chalu kiya hai jaha log apna dabba laake bread aur snacks bhar lete hain. Aur jab Gokuldham mein waste management drive hongi, main apne soda ke bottles bhi recycling me de deta hoon. Ab thoda guilt-free mehsoos hone laga hai. Dheere dheere sab log bhi adopt kar rahe hain.”

Jethalal: “Chalo phir, agar ye meeting-weeting ho gayi hai to soda peene jate hai. Aaj ki party meri taraf se!”

Closing Note

Har character ka tareeka alag tha, par ek cheez common thi: kisi ne force nahi kiya, sabne adopt kiya.

Gokuldham humein ek simple cheez sikhata hai:

change tab stick karta hai jab woh culture ban jaata hai.

Jab Bhide rule banata hai, Jethalal adapt karta hai, Anjali practice karti hai, aur baaki log dheere dheere follow karte hain, tab sustainability ek initiative nahi rehta. Woh normal ban jaata hai.

Because real change doesn’t start with products. It starts with what we normalize.
