Saathi: Empowering Girls, One Biodegradable Pad at a Time

Jodhpur, Rajasthan – Imagine a world where access to sanitary napkins isn't a privilege but a right, and where caring for your body doesn’t harm the planet. Saathi, a pioneering social enterprise co-founded by Tarun Bothra and Kristin Kagetsu, is turning this vision into reality.

As part of their ambitious "Ten Million Pads Initiative," Saathi recently distributed biodegradable sanitary napkins to hundreds of girls across three government schools in Jodhpur district:

  • Rajkiya Uchch Madhyamik Vidyalaya, Cherai

  • Shri Shaheed Azam Bhagat Singh Uchch Madhyamik Vidyalaya, Tinwari

  • Shri Balaji Adarsh Uchch Madhyamik Vidyalaya, Rampura

This initiative aims to provide sustainable menstrual hygiene solutions while addressing the urgent need for awareness and education.

Breaking Barriers with Sustainable Menstrual Hygiene

In many communities, menstruation remains a challenge due to limited access to sanitary products, social stigma, and a lack of education. As a result, many girls miss school and face health complications. Saathi is working to change this narrative.

Beyond distributing pads, Saathi is conducting workshops on the basics of menstrual hygiene, educating young girls on the difference between using regular products and Saathi products, focusing on both personal health and environmental well-being.

"Our main objective is not only the safety of women and girls but also the safety of the earth," says Tarun Bothra, co-founder and CTO of Saathi. "By combining innovation with impact, we're ensuring a future where menstruation doesn’t hold anyone back."

Biodegradable Pads: A Sustainable Future for Menstrual Health

Saathi pads are made from bamboo and banana fiber, making them biodegradable and compostable. Unlike conventional sanitary napkins, which contribute significantly to plastic waste, Saathi pads decompose naturally, minimizing their environmental footprint.

Additionally, Saathi pads are chemical-free, reducing the risk of irritation and health concerns associated with conventional products. Their slogan, "Care for Two: You & Earth," reflects their dual commitment to both individual well-being and environmental responsibility.

"We want every girl to have access to safe menstrual products without harming the planet," adds Kristin Kagetsu, co-founder and CEO of Saathi. "Some may say we have an ambitious goal, but that's what is required to make change."

Scaling Impact: A Collective Effort

The "Ten Million Pads Initiative" builds upon the success of Saathi’s earlier "One Million Pads Initiative." This nationwide effort aims to reach millions of women and girls, providing them with not just products, but also education and support, furthering Saathi’s mission of health, sustainability, and gender equality.

This work is made possible through the support of organizations like DBS Foundation and Tattv Bodh Foundation. DBS Foundation creates impact across social and environmental areas, improving lives and livelihoods in the region.

Building a Movement, Not Just a Product

Saathi isn’t just manufacturing pads; they’re building a movement—a movement towards a healthier, more sustainable future for both women and the planet.
