Is Your Period Draining Our Planet?

Is Your Period Draining Our Planet?

The sight of receding glaciers is a powerful symbol of climate change. These frozen giants are vital freshwater sources, essential for ecosystems and human survival. Yet, their fragility mirrors the vulnerability of our planet's entire water system. As we learn about this fragility on #WorldWaterDay, it’s imperative to reflect: how water-conscious are our daily choices? The connection between melting glaciers, growing water scarcity, and even our choices about menstrual products might seem distant, but in reality, they are deeply intertwined.

The Growing Water Crisis: A Global Emergency

Climate change has pushed everything toward a negative turn. Carbon emissions, deforestation, burning of fossil fuels, greenhouse gases — our choices have led us here. And the oceans are paying the price. They absorb 90 percent of the Earth's warmth, which means marine glaciers — the ones near the poles and along the coasts of Alaska — are melting faster than ever (Source: WWF).

And when glaciers melt, the world changes. Rivers dry up. Lakes shrink. Sea levels rise. Wetlands — some of the most vital ecosystems on Earth — are disappearing. Half of the world's wetlands are already gone. And the water we rely on — the fresh, clean water we need for life — slips away.

We take water for granted, but the truth is, not everyone has it. Nearly 1.1 billion people worldwide do not have access to water. Around 2.7 billion face water scarcity at least one month every year. When water is scarce, health suffers. Almost 2.4 billion people live without proper sanitation, risking diseases like cholera and typhoid. Every year, 2 million people — mostly children — die from diarrheal diseases alone (Source: WWF). All of this because they lack something as basic as clean water.

Melting Resources, Sustainable Sources: Period Care and Water Conservation

In 2023, glaciers lost over 600 gigatons of water World Water Day. Let that sink in. It is the largest glacier mass loss in 50 years. And it is not just a number. It is a warning. A reminder that things are changing faster than we ever imagined, and the truth is, we all have a role to play. The earth's resources are not limitless. Glaciers, rivers, and wetlands exist in a fine balance that supports life, but as they are lost, the ripple effects reach out to touch everything—including how we handle something as mundane as periods.

"When one thread unravels, the entire fabric shifts."

We often overlook the hidden water footprint of our everyday products. One decision can have a ripple effect. Disposable plastic pads and tampons use enormous quantities of water and energy to manufacture, leading to pollution and depleting resources. In fact, the production of single-use menstrual products globally contributes an estimated 245,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually (Source: World Health Organization). Most of these products also release microplastics into bodies of water, further polluting the freshwater we rely on.

Clean water is precious, and essential for health, including menstrual hygiene. Meanwhile, not everyone has enough clean water to drink, nevermind safely wash reusable cloth pads. But then, how are we going to make our choices of period care contribute to saving water instead of putting more burden on it? By opting for sustainable period products, we can help end the waste cycle. Completely biodegradable pads, such as Saathi pads, break down in months without contributing to plastic waste or needing to be washed so in water scarce areas they can be a great option that is still sustainable.

What is Your Water-Wise Period Choice?

#WorldWaterDay is a reminder to ask ourselves: Are our period products water-wise?

Glaciers are melting. Water shortages are a reality. The time to reevaluate our decisions is now.

Some alternatives to consider:

  • Menstrual Cups – Constructed from medical-grade silicone, these cups can be used for years and need little water to clean, greatly minimizing waste.

  • Biodegradable Pads (such as Saathi pads) – In contrast to traditional plastic pads that can take centuries to break down into microplastics, biodegradable pads decompose into organic material in months, minimizing long-term environmental damage.

Ready to make a water-wise switch? At Saathi, we are committed to providing sustainable period care solutions. Explore our range of completely biodegradable pads and learn more about our mission to create a healthier planet on our website.

Our daily choices shape the future of our planet. And even something as small as a pad can make a difference.

Saathi’s Commitment to a Sustainable Future

At Saathi, we believe in a healthier, more sustainable planet, addressing often-overlooked issues like periods and the environment. Our vision is simple: to provide every woman a dignified period experience -  to make them feel seen, heard, and valued — while protecting the environment at the same time. We strive to offer products made from natural and eco-friendly materials that are better for individuals and the Earth. As we reflect on the rapid loss of glacial ice and the growing threat of water scarcity this World Water Day, we encourage everyone to consider the environmental impact of their choices, including period care.

Beyond Menstrual Care: How to Live a Water Conscious Life?

Menstrual care is just one aspect of sustainability. Protecting the precious resources that sustain our lives, especially the 70% reliant on frozen water, requires broader changes in our daily habits. Here are a few ideas to help reduce your water footprint:

  • Reduce plastic consumption – Plastic waste contaminates water sources and harms aquatic life. Consider reusable or biodegradable products.

  • Conserve water at home – Check for leaks and fix them. Shorter showers: Yes, we know you love to sing in there, but make sure the tap and showers are off.

  • Use water-efficient appliances

  • Reuse the water from washing vegetables for the plants instead of letting it go down the sink.

  • Support sustainable practices – Choose brands and products that put high priority on water conservation and waste minimization.

  • Educate and advocate – Talk about it! Discussion leads to awareness which leads to change.

  • Be mindful while consuming water – Do turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. Every drop matters.

  • If you can, consider rainwater harvesting for plants or washing your vehicle. It’s recommended to filter it properly if you want to use it for washing food items.

We Need Global Action, Now

What the world needs right now is action. Real, collective action. One nation, one place, even two nations cannot fix this alone. We need the world to come together. Countries with coastlines can invest in desalination — turning seawater into drinking water through efficient technology. Nations that share rivers and lakes should collaborate on cross-border water management, working together to use these resources sustainably. And ocean protection — it is not optional anymore. Pollution, plastic, chemicals — they have done so much harm. We need to get this under control.

While global agreements and governmental policies are essential, companies can empower consumers to make more sustainable choices. Companies have a responsibility to provide these alternatives and to educate consumers about the environmental consequences of their choices. Together, through informed consumer decisions and responsible company practices, we can contribute to the global action needed to protect our planet.

Conclusion: Every Drop Counts, Every Choice Matters

Our planets frozen water is melting, a stark reminder that these vital resources cannot be taken for granted. Let’s commit to sustainable solutions in every aspect of our lives. By making conscious choices about period care and daily habits, we contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future. This World Water Day, remember: every drop makes up an ocean, and every choice we make has an impact.
